This design endeavors to allow children to ‘Discover’ and ‘Explore’ their surroundings. The students attending the kindergarden are encouraged to wander, finding corners and walls that afford them the opportunity to turn the corner, discovering the next space. With a set of connected rooms that are separated only by short walls in some instances, and glass walls in others, the school remains in every sense of the word ‘Open’. Open to learning, open to discovery, and open to the possibilities afforded by the flexible design.
The design achieves these goals by using a grid system, on which a set of walls are strategically placed to create a but of overlap between each wall. This forces the student and the adult alike to ‘turn the corner’ discovering the next space. The walls are made up of opaque wood and transparent glass. The roof and floors tiles push and pull from inside to out, blurring the lines between what is enclosed and outdoors space.
